The following consumer products were recalled between May 3rd – May 17th due to toxicological and/or labelling violations in the United States, Canada or Europe:

Canada

The products “Orient brushes” and “Fill Your Own Panda Play Stainless Steel Food Containers” were recalled due to the presence of lead in excess of the allowable limit. Lead is toxic to children at low exposure levels and has been shown to have the potential to cause intellectual and behavioural deficits in children.

Europe

The toys “Modern Girl, Pretty Girls”, “Soft Racer”, “Nail Art Beds Set”, “Design Nails Nail Art. Beautiful Nails of Charming Ladies”, “Gelpens Glitter”, and “Oval Star” were withdrawn from the market and/or recalled from end users due to the presence of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), diisononyl phthalate (DINP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and/or di-“isobutyl” phthalate (DIBP). According to the REACH Regulations, the phthalates DEHP, DBP and BBP are prohibited in all toys and childcare articles, while phthalates DINP, DIDP and DNOP are prohibited in toys or childcare articles that can be placed in the mouth by children.

The toy “Beauty Dollys” was withdrawn from the market due to the presence of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) as well as azo dyes. According to the REACH Regulations, the phthalates DEHP, DBP and BBP are prohibited in all toys and childcare articles, while phthalates DINP, DIDP and DNOP are prohibited in toys or childcare articles that can be placed in the mouth by children.

The product, earrings and necklace (name unknown), was rejected at the border for import due to the presence of cadmium in excess of the limit outlined in the REACH regulations.

The product, women’s shoes and sandals (name unknown), was rejected at the border for import due to the presence of pentachlorophenol in excess of the national standard UNE 59950.

The product “Plastic Balloons” were recalled as children’s balloon blowing kits are prohibited for sale in Canada. These kits may expose a child to inhalation of vapors of any solvents present, thus posing a safety concern to child

The product “Cocoa Latte Hot Drink Maker” was recalled due to the potential of lead leaching from a component of the product. Lead is toxic to children at low exposure levels and has been shown to have the potential to cause intellectual and behavioural deficits in children.

Europe

Children’s sandals, ladies shoes, “Leder Mini Bikini Extreme Passions” and “Kinder Leder Boots” were withdrawn from the market, rejected at the border for import and/or banned from product marketing due to the presence of chromium (VI). Chromium (VI) is classified as sensitising and may trigger allergic reactions.

The toys “Kul med Scrapbooking”, a set of two plastic figures, “Pirate set”, “Toy series of happy garden”, a plastic doll and plastic ducks were withdrawn from the market and/or banned from product marketing due to the presence of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), di-“isobutyl” phthalate (DIBP), diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP) and/or diisononyl phthalate (DINP). According to the REACH Regulations, the phthalates DEHP, DBP and BBP are prohibited in all toys and childcare articles, while phthalates DINP, DIDP and DNOP are prohibited in toys or childcare articles that can be placed in the mouth by children.

Children’s trousers was withdrawn from the market and banned from product marketing due to the potential release of nickel in excess of the limit outlined in the REACH regulations.

The products “100% Pflanzen Haarfarbe” and “Henna black, Henna gold, Henna blond, Henna coppery red” were withdrawn from the market due to the presence of mesophilic aerobic microorganisms. The products pose a serious microbiological risk for consumers.

The product, notebook was withdrawn from the market due to the presence of cadmium in excess of the limit outlined in the REACH regulations.

The US National Academy of Sciences recently released a scientific panel report April 30, 2013 titled “ Assessing Risks to Endangered and Threatened Species from Pesticides”. This report is focused on ecological risk assessment and is likely to have a significant impact on how pesticides are evaluated in the future in the US and Canada. It also has implications beyond Threatened and Endangered Species.

The products “Better Living Designs Reed Diffuser – Green Apple” and “Hillhouse Naturals Reed Diffuser Oils” were recalled due to the absence of the mandatory labelling as required by the Consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations, 2001. The containers lacked the symbol and warnings required for toxic, flammable, and/or irritant products.

The toys “Beautiful Fashionable Shopping”, “Piccolo Mondo”, “Dreamy Coach”, “Ginni family”, and “Pacioccotti profumini” were “rejected at border for import” and/or “banned from product marketing” due to the presence of bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). According to the REACH Regulation the phthalates DEHP, DBP and BBP are prohibited in all toys and childcare articles, while phthalates DINP, DIDP and DNOP are prohibited in toys or childcare articles that can be placed in the mouth by children.

We are pleased to announce that Claire McAuley, a senior scientist in Intrinsik’s Calgary office, has been added to the First Nations Environmental Health Innovation Network’s (FNEHIN) researcher directory. This select database is intended to provide First Nations communities and Tribal Councils with a list of approved researchers with demonstrated experience and expertise in specific research areas.

Claire has a considerable amount of experience conducting research for First Nations and other clients in areas such as:

Traditional food and vegetation studies;
Human health risk assessments associated with mining, hydroelectric developments, pipelines and tankfarms;
Mercury in fish;
Surface water quality assessments; and,
Contaminants in snow.

“Wildwood Home Fragrance Products” including “Reed Diffusers”, “Reed Diffuser Refills” and “Refresher Oils” were recalled due to the lack of mandatory labelling and child-resistant closures as required by the Consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations, 2001. The products contain ingredients that can be hazardous if ingested and subsequently aspirated.

The toys “Sponge Bob Print & Colour”, “Wrestling Fight”, “Vogue Girl Doll” and “Toy Telephone” were “withdrawn from the market” and/or “banned from product marketing” due to the presence of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and/or dibutyl phthalate (DBP). Consumers were also warned of the risks associated with the “Plastic Bath Toys” due to the presence of di-isononyl phthalate (DINP). According to the REACH Regulation the phthalates DEHP is prohibited in all toys and childcare articles, while phthalates DINP, DIDP and DNOP are prohibited in toys or childcare articles that can be placed in the mouth by children.

The product “Extra Strong Glue, Multipurpose” was “recalled from end users” and “seized by the authorities” due to the presence of benzene. Benzene is carcinogenic and mutagenic. The product does not comply with the REACH Regulation.

The FRAMS “Antibacterial gel” was “withdrawn from the market” and “recalled from end users” due to the presence of methanol and the lack of danger symbols, danger indication, risk warnings or cautionary advice for this preparation, which should at least be classified as toxic. Methanol leads to damage to the central nervous system, in particular to the optic nerves, and also to the kidneys, liver, heart and other organs. In addition, the packaging does not have a child-resistant lid. The product does not comply with Directive 1999/45/EC relating to the classification, packaging and labelling of dangerous preparations.

The Dicota “Backpack for notebook” was “withdrawn from the market” due to the presence of dimethylfumarate (DMF). Dimethylfumarate is a substance which is strongly sensitising on contact with the skin, and consumer products containing dimethylfumarate are banned according to the REACH Regulation.

The product “Pomeroy/San Miguel Reed Diffusers and Refills” was recalled due to the lack of mandatory labelling and child-resistant closure as required by the Consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations, 2001. The product contains ingredients that can be hazardous if ingested and subsequently aspirated. For more details, please see the following link.

The products “Simply Charming Hair Clips”, “Assorted Rebella rings from Zatnick Inc.”, “Dawgs Shoe Tag Charms”, and “Children’s Rings from the MAJA collection by Créations DPR” were recalled due to the presence of lead in excess allowable amounts. Lead is toxic to children, even at low exposure levels and is thus restricted at low levels of use in children’s products, including jewellery. The product “Metal Mood Rings” was recalled due to the presence of cadmium in excess of guidance levels proposed recently by Health Canada. Cadmium is a heavy metal which is known to be more toxic than lead. For more details, please see the following link.

The product “Minérobec Mineral Kits” was recalled due to the presence of chrysotile asbestos. The handling of asbestos mineral, can potentially produce asbestos dust. For more details, please see the following link.

The toys “Dolls”, “Crayons”, “Pull-along trolley”, “Toy vehicles” were “withdrawn from the market, and/or recalled from end users” due to the presence of bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), di-isononyl phthalate (DINP), di-isodecyl phthalate (DIDP) and/or dibutyl phthalate (DBP). According to the REACH Regulation DEHP and DBP are prohibited in all toys and childcare articles, while phthalates DINP, DIDP and DNOP are prohibited in toys or childcare articles that can be placed in the mouth by children.

The product “Glue” was withdrawn from market due to the label not including the signs indicating danger or the symbols for dangerous substances and preparations. The product does not comply with the regulations on the classification, labelling and packaging (CLP) of substances and mixtures or Directive 1999/45/EC and 2001/60/EC on the classification, packaging and labelling of dangerous preparations.

The products “Ladies’ gloves” were “withdrawn from market” due to the presence of Chromium (VI) in the leather of the gloves. Chromium (VI) is classified as sensitising and may trigger allergic reactions.

The product “Cooling element” was “withdrawn from market” due to the presence of ethylene glycol which, if swallowed, can be toxic. . Due to its characteristic form, appearance and packaging, consumers may mistake the product for foodstuffs and therefore swallow the liquid. The product does not comply with the Directive 87/357/EEC on products which, appearing to be other than they are, endanger the health or safety of consumers.

Ruth Hull awarded SETAC Presidential Citation for Exemplary Service

According to the REACH Regulation DEHP and DBP are prohibited in all toys and childcare articles, while DINP is prohibited in toys or childcare articles that can be placed in the mouth by children.

The products “Bath Oil”, “Shower Gel” and “Hair Shampoo” were withdrawn from the market due to the presence of levels of anionic tenside which, if swallowed, may cause aspiration pneumonia. Consumers may mistake the products for foodstuffs due to their characteristic form, appearance and packaging. These products do not comply with Directive 87/357/EEC on products which endanger the health and safety of consumers by appearing to be other than they are.

The toy “Gouache” was recalled from end users due to excessive quantities of the aromatic amine aniline, which does not comply with the Toys Safety Directive and the relevant European standard EN 71-9.

The products “PEGAZOO brand children’s pendants”, “Face Paint 10 dazzling colours”, “Ardene Glam Collection Fairy Pendant”, and “Armani Junior Garments with Crystal Ornamentation”, were recalled due to the level of lead and cadmium (for “Ardene Glam Collection Fairy Pendant” only), both of which pose a poisoning hazard if ingested by young children.

The clothing “Girls’ shorts” and “Men’s leather wristband” were voluntarily recalled from end users due to the levels of azo dyes including azo dye 4-aminoazobenzene and benzidine-releasing azo dye, respectively. These products do not comply with the REACH Regulation.

The product “Girls’ shoes” was withdrawn from the market due to the presence of dimethylfumarate (DMF). DMF is a substance which is strongly sensitising on contact with the skin, and consumer products containing DMF are banned according to the REACH Regulation

The jewellery “Earrings” was rejected at the border for importation due the presence of cadmium. This product does not comply with the REACH Regulation.

The decorative article “Glass oil lamp” was rejected for importation at the border due the structure of the wick which may allow small children to ingest the oil in the lamp. The product does not comply with the relevant European standard EN 14059.

The toys, “Toy mobile phone”, were withdrawn from the market and recalled from end users, due to the potential for children to access and ingest the button cell batteries. The product does not comply with the Toys Safety Directive and with the relevant European standard EN 71-1.

The BC MOH awards Intrinsik a major HHRA studying the Northeastern BC Oil & Gas Sector

Intrinsik is pleased to announce our Calgary Office was recently awarded a large multi-year contract by the BC Ministry of Health to complete a Phase 2 Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA) of the oil and gas sector activities in Northeastern British Columbia.

As part of the Phase 2 work, the Intrinsik team will complete an human health risk assessment, and a jurisdictional scan of past and current studies and related reports and a review of existing regulations. It will focus on potential impacts to air, water, land and food quality and how these may relate to public health. It is anticipated that Phase 2 work will be complete by March 2014.

“In order to conduct this important work, Intrinsik assembled a multi-disciplinary team of scientific professionals with demonstrated expertise and experience in designing and performing assessments of this kind. On behalf of the Intrinsik study team, we look forward to assisting the Ministry of Health and all British Columbians to better understand the potential health-related impacts of oil and gas activities in northeast B.C. through the completion of what promises to be a comprehensive and transparent health risk assessment.”

The following consumer products were recently recalled due to toxicological and/or labelling violations in Canada, the United States or Europe:

Canada

The products “Khanna children’s bangle sets” and “Kids Collection Imitation Pearl P200 Children’s Jewellery Set” were recalled due to the level of lead, which poses a poisoning hazard if ingested by young children.

The products “Bella Bling Charms” and “Shell Magic Children’s Jewellery” were recalled due to the levels of lead and cadmium, which pose a poisoning hazard if ingested by young children.

The product “Captain Cutlass Pirate Toy Guns” was voluntarily recalled due to excessive levels of lead found in the surface paint that violates the federal lead paint standard.

The products “Ladies’ shoes” and “Sandals” were voluntarily recalled due to the level of Chromium (VI), which is classified as sensitising and may trigger allergic reactions.

The toys “Plastic doll with accessories”, “Plastic boy doll”, “Plastic doll”, “Plastic strands – Scoubidou” and “Doll” were withdrawn from the market and recalled from end users, banned from marketing or voluntarily withdrawn due to the presence of bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and/or the presence of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and/or the presence of di-isononyl phthalate (DINP). According to the REACH Regulation DEHP and DBP are prohibited in all toys and childcare articles, while DINP is prohibited in toys or childcare articles that can be placed in the mouth by children.

The clothing “Men’s leather wristband “ and “Shorts” were voluntarily recalled due to the levels of azo dyes benzidine and 4-aminobiphenyl or 4-aminoazobenzene. These products do not comply with the REACH Regulation.

The products “EOS Rebel T4i Digital SLR Cameras” have been voluntarily recalled due to the risk of skin irritation to the consumer from a chemical reaction in the cameras’ rubber grips.

Europe

The toy “Key ring duck aquarium and water dolphin” was banned from marketing due to the presence of a liquid with aliphatic and /or aromatic compounds, R65 characterized. If the liquid leaks it can cause acute poisoning in lungs. The product does not comply with the REACH Regulation.

The toys “Plastic toy with accessories”, “Plastic dolls”, “Police play set”, and “Toy gun set” were banned from marketing, withdrawn from the market, voluntarily recalled, or rejected for import at the border due to the presence of bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and/or di-isononyl phthalate (DINP). According to the REACH Regulation, DEHP and DBP are prohibited in all toys and childcare articles, while DINP is prohibited in toys or childcare articles that can be placed in the mouth by children.

The childcare product “Soother” was withdrawn from the market and recalled from end users due to the presence of detectable peroxide residues. The product does not comply with the relevant European standard EN 1400-3.

The products “Tattoo ink” were banned from marketing due to the presence of aromatic amine, o-anisidine (CAS no. 90-04-0), which is a substance classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, toxic and sensitising. In addition, two of the products contained aromatic hydrocarbons such as styrenes and alpha-methyl styrenes or 2-ethoxyaniline, which are also toxic. According to the Council of Europe Resolution ResAP (2008) on requirements and criteria for the safety of tattoos and permanent make-up, o-anisidine should not be present in tattoo ink.

The products “Children’s shoes” and “Gloves” were withdrawn from the market due to the presence of dimethylfumarate (DMF). DMF is a substance which is strongly sensitising on contact with the skin, and consumer products containing DMF are banned according to the REACH Regulation.

The product “Liquid for electronic cigarette” was voluntarily withdrawn from the market due to insufficient labelling for the level of nicotine. The product does not comply with the Directive 1999/45/EC on the classification, packaging, and labelling of dangerous preparations.

The product “Tattoo ink” was voluntarily withdrawn from the market due to the level of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). According to the Council of Europe Resolution ResAP (2008) on requirements and criteria for the safety of tattoos and permanent make-up, PAHs may not exceed a certain concentration.

The product “Glue” was voluntarily recalled from end users due to the level of chloroform. The product does not comply with the REACH Regulation.

According to the REACH Regulation, DEHP is prohibited in all toys and childcare articles.

The import of product “Men’s shoes” was rejected at the border due to the level of chromium (VI), which is classified as sensitising and may trigger allergic reactions.

The chemical product “Tattoo ink” was voluntarily withdrawn from the market and consumers warned of risks due to the levels of nickel and arsenic. According to ResAP (2008) 1, nickel levels in tattoo inks must be as low as technically achievable as nickel has a high allergenic potential.

The import of the jewellery products “(1) Ring; (2) Earrings; (3) Necklace; (4) Necklace; (5) Earrings” and “Jewellery Set” were rejected at the border, and “(1) Ring; (2) Earrings; (3) Necklace; (4) Necklace; (5) Earrings” was also voluntarily destroyed due to the levels of cadmium. The products do not comply with the REACH Regulation.
